ABOUT THE DEKALB COMMUNITY ACADEMY
The DeKalb Community Academy is an initiative aimed at empowering communities and fostering partnerships through education on policy, zoning, land-use, and other planning-related matters. Our goal is to advance the vision of a livable, equitable, sustainable, beautiful, and prosperous DeKalb County. The Academy will eventually serve all districts within unincorporated DeKalb County through a series of trainings and educational resources.

Download the GuidebookThe “Community 101” program is a newly launched training under the DeKalb Community Academy and is designed to provide tailored training to residents in unincorporated DeKalb, equipping them with essential knowledge about the services offered by the DeKalb County Planning & Sustainability Department.
Specifically, this training will cover the main services offered under the Long Range Planning and Current Planning divisions. Areas of topics include but are not limited to:
- What is Planning?
- Understanding the 2050 Unified Plan (Comprehensive Plan)
- Land Use, Activity Centers, and Amendment Processes
- Transportation
- Sustainability

Concluding DCA engagement in July, we finalized our four (4) key priorities:
Key Priorities Focus on Community Activation Strategies Utilizing Public Transportation to Increase Economic Development Improve Bike & Pedestrian Infrastructure Implement Tactical Urbanism Strategies at High-Risk Intersections Thank you to everyone who participated in this session and we look forward bringing this to Stephenson!
The Towers Community District brought us a lot of great insight on how we can incorporate more tactical urbanism strategies at high-risk intersections and focus change in identified areas.

Through careful selection, Planning staff have chosen three dedicated community members, of their respective districts, to follow-through on initiatives that will focus on different aspects of community development. Each Ambassador has an Action Plan that will help guide their community efforts throughout the year and focus their goals on making a difference in DeKalb.
