What is a Comprehensive Plan?

A comprehensive plan is a policy document that details the County's long-term vision and goals and outlines the steps necessary to achieve them. The Plan is intended to guide growth and development in an organized, equitable, and sustainable manner. To do so, it looks to the future to anticipate trends and issues that could impact how growth and development occur and addresses topics like land use, housing, transportation, economic development, and more.

Why is the Comprehensive Plan Important?

DeKalb County is expected to add over 100,000 new residents and around 75,000 new jobs by 2050. The plan lays out the policies for how DeKalb County residents want their city to grow.

Having a vision for growth is critical to the long-term success of our county. It is the guiding document that county agencies, residents, employers, developers, and other stakeholders use to ensure that we retain a high quality of life for our residents.

    What are the project's goals?

The 2055 Comprehensive Land Use Plan Update aims to target 9 key elements within the project.

    • Land Use
    • Economic Development
    • Housing
    • Transportation
    • Equity
    • Public Engagement
    • Arts, Culture, & Historic Resources
    • Community Health
    • Natural Resources / Sustainability

Why are you updating the Comprehensive Land Use Plan?

The Georgia Planning Act of 1989 requires each local government to update their comprehensive plan every five years to maintain eligibility for state loans, grants, and permits.  In partnership with Georgia Department of Community Affairs

To maintain Qualified Local Government Status (QLG), DeKalb County needs to adopt the update to the Comprehensive Land Use Plan by October 31st, 2027.
